President Paris
So celeb empress Paris Hilton responded to the stupid McCain anti-Obama ad. Quite nicely so.
However, besides from the video being kind of funny, I find the most fun in the comments. Plus one interesting observation: If Republicans are big supporters of entrepreneurship, how come they try to ridicule Paris Hilton? After all she seems to be the embodiment of turning rock to solid gold.

Risk, accountability and bailing out banks
Umair Haque has a nice little piece on the ‘logic’ behind government wanting to bail out banks troubled by the economic downturn.
To me the irony of the situation is startling: When things go well, banks want absolutely no interference from government. When things go wrong they line up to get bolstered by taxpayers money. It’s like saying that we want the profits, but we don’t want to run the real risk of our actions.
Last time I checked that was an utopian business model in a capitalist society, so let’s not screw with that. Accountability? Yes, please.

Boom turning to epic bust?
For everyone without somewhat of a clear understanding of how the boom in China and India is affecting the environment, the Britannica Blog has a stellar piece. A small snippet:
As of 2006, coal provided two-thirds of China’s energy needs; consumption is expected to double by 2025, to more than 3 billion tons a year—twice the amount used in North America, and nearly four times the amount used in Europe. By 2030, at current rates, China’s coal consumption will surpass that of the rest of the world combined.
It may be that you don’t think this affects you. But after reading this you should seriously consider whether that’s true.

Why plans seldom work out
Spotted this from Nick Pagan, and I think he’s absolutely spot on.
…creating a plan based primarily upon time estimates and expecting it to be right actually designs failure into the whole effort.
If you, as I, find it challenging to craft real solid plans, go read Nicks piece. It’s really inspiring.

Reassure me, Santa!
Roque Santa Cruz is a deadly striker in football. But just as he scored goals galore last season for my beloved Blackburn Rovers, he’s very, VERY vague about where he’s going to apply his trade in the season that kicks off in a fortnight.
Newspapers may claim that he’s staying, but all I hear is a player who’s keeping his options wide open.
Please, Santa. Stay on board. I’m sure it’s going to be a great season for you in the Blackburn shirt.

Liberal force
Personally I found it very amusing when political parties step up to do exactly the opposite of what their ideological background suggests. Like when a liberal government is more busy imposing rules and regulations than socialists ever were.
In Denmark the conservative minister for health, Jakob Axel Nielsen, wants to impose behavioural taxes on smoking, drinking and eating candy. It’s hard to argue that not doing those things will increase your chances of a healthy life, but still I’m wondering whether taxes is actually the right way to go?
